Denim shoddy is recycled fibre mechanically recovered from denim waste — mostly clean cutting-room clips collected from jeans factories. Because the indigo colour is already locked in the fibre, denim shoddy lets spinners and nonwoven producers skip dyeing altogether, saving water, chemicals and cost. How denim shoddy is produced
- Sourcing: Post-industrial denim clips are collected directly from garment cutting rooms — clean, dry and pre-consumer.
- Sorting: Clips are separated by shade (light / medium / dark) and construction. Sorting discipline is what separates a consistent supplier from a cheap one.
- Pulling / opening: Sorted clips pass through opening lines that tear the fabric back into fibre. Line settings determine fibre length and cleanliness.
- Baling: The fibre is hydraulically pressed into 350–450 kg export bales, PP-wrapped and container-optimised.
What is denim shoddy used for?
- Open-end (rotor) spinning: recycled denim yarns for weaving and knitting;
- Nonwovens and felts: insulation, padding, automotive underlays and acoustic panels;
- Mop and coarse yarns: durable, absorbent cleaning products.
What to check before buying
Ask every supplier for: fibre length range (typically 10–28 mm depending on application), composition declaration (cotton percentage per lot), colour consistency between bales, moisture level, and proof of regular supply capacity. A trial container tells you more than any datasheet — a serious manufacturer will welcome it.
Consistency lot after lot is the single most important quality of a denim shoddy supplier.
